The widening world of Pharmaceuticals has resulted in two collateral expansions. First is the drug discovery research and the second is in terms of increase in the number of units and total manufacturing of pharmaceuticals on commercial scale. The second in turn is the direct result of first. The drug discovery therefore occupies a prime place in the world of Pharmaceuticals. In agreement with this, the department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry or Medicinal Chemistry is considered to be the heart of Pharmacy College and Curriculum.
The past two decades witnessed phenomenal growth in Medicinal Chemistry. Though originated from Organic Chemistry, the subject has reached an enormous level of complexity and encompasses many basic sciences and applied areas including biochemistry, molecular biology, proteomics, genomics and bioinformatics.
Over the years the department has tried to keep pace with the changing scenario globally. Accordingly, the initial projects in the department consisted mainly of synthesis and analog design. Later the concept rational designing was followed and the project shifted and conformational studies along with impurity profiling.
The department has tried to procure different purpose software’s for the research and train students accordingly. It has received grants from various government agencies and pharma and related companies to support the research work.
Presently Ten (10) students are pursuing their post graduation in the department under Three (3) recognized guides.
The department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry continues its pursuit for excellence.
