Department of Pharmacology was set up as soon as academic activity of Pharmacy College was started in June 1971. Pharmacology is one of the important subjects which deals with detailed study of drugs particularly their actions on living beings, organs or tissues. It includes allied topics like Pharmacodynamics, Pharmacokinetics, Therapeutics, Toxicology, Chemotherapy, Pharmacoepidemiology, PharmacoEconomics and Clinical Pharmacy. Thus, Pharmacology is an important subject which connects pharmacy to medical sciences. Pharmacologists also teach other subjects like anatomy and pathophysiology.
Pharmacology departmental staff is involved in teaching therapeutic effects of drugs, their site and mechanism(s) of action and also associated toxic manifestations. In addition the staff members also teach Pharmacokinetics, Drug interactions and Clinical Pharmacy. Various experimental demonstrations explaining drugs effects, site of action on different tissues and organs are also taught to students by carefully designing both invivo and invitro experiments. Drugs interactions experiments are also demonstrated to students. Various experimental illustrations, diagrams and photographs, human organs, human body skeleton, physiological and anatomical diagrams of important organs are displayed in the pharmacology laboratory to facilitate students to understand the physiological actions and then to learn the importance of experimental pharmacology.
The undergraduate and post-graduate laboratory has excellent facilities and is equipped with sophisticated instruments, equipments and well-maintained animal house. The equipments and instruments are used largely to study drug effects on isolated tissues/organs, whole animals, drug screening programs and evaluating drug effects both at cellular and molecular level.
The department is also engaged in other professional activities such as
a) Bioavailability / Bioequivalence studies on marketed medicinal products
b) Preclinical toxicity (acute & sub acute) studies and
c) Other related consultancy services to Pharmaceutical Industry and allied group of companies.
